Sibanye Stillwater Platinum operations, Kroondal and Rustenburg, held very successful safety and health days over a three day period on 3, 4 and 5 September 2018

There were three events, one for the trackless shafts and two for the conventional shafts, and they were attended by approximately 21,000 people, including underground and surface employees from all levels.

The Safety and Health days took place at the Waterval Village Rugby Stadium where a professionally built stage with a sound system and two big screens was set up so that everyone could see and hear the proceedings and presentations easily. The event was hosted a very lively master of ceremonies, who also acted as the interpreter, and who kept the crowds connected and responsive. Questions on safety were randomly asked to people in the crowd and when answered correctly they won spot prizes adding to the positive atmosphere.

A local industrial theatre group entertained the crowd with songs and dance routines and also delivered a strong interactive safety message during the performance. The crowd participated and listened intently to all messages delivered by the various speakers.

CEO, Wayne Robinson reminded everyone present why safety is important to the mining industry; “Compliance is our licence to mine and South Africa is a very mineral rich country, platinum, gold and diamonds to name a few, but its biggest treasure is its people”

At the venue there were stalls with information on adult education (AET) and wellness and health services which were well supported by attendees.

The events were supported and attended by senior leadership of the Sibanye Stillwater, Union Representative from Regional Structures, vice presidents form all units, the senior vice-president and head of mining Dawie van Aswegen and an inspector from the Department of Mineral Resources.

And finally all workers were reminded by the CEO to put their own and their colleagues safety first no matter the circumstances; “No job is so important that it cannot be done safely – refuse to do any unsafe work in any unsafe workplace, it is your right and your responsibility”
